Playing Out - Bristol
In Bristol a group of parents have pioneered a scheme to allow their kids the opportunity to play outside in their street. Put like that it doesn’t sound like a revolution, but it should be an idea which takes hold over the country.
The idea is, with the councils permission, to close their street to traffic from 3pm to 5pm. The ‘home from school time’. Kids can play in the street with their friends and without the risk of being hurt by cars. It’s a wonderful, simple, idea which should be part of every city in the country.
Nothing is organised for the kids to do. It is left up to the kids to create their own games. Which they do! Just give children the space and they will create a world. I think that this idea should be common place, just as it was 50 years ago. It keeps children active, and builds communities.
